Down By Law are an American punk rock band formed in 1989 by singer and guitarist Dave Smalley, previously of DYS, Dag Nasty and ALL. While firmly rooted in melodic hardcore, the band developed a sound of their own through sharp guitars, memorable choruses and lyrics dealing with politics, independence and everyday frustrations.
Down By Law emerged during an important period for American punk, when underground bands were beginning to reach wider audiences without abandoning their DIY principles. Their records should appeal to listeners of Bad Religion, Descendents, ALL, Dag Nasty and early Pennywise.
1. Blue
Released in 1992, Blue captures Down By Law during their raw early years. The guitars are urgent, the production is direct and Dave Smalley’s distinctive voice gives the songs an emotional edge.

2. All Scratched Up!

3. Fly the Flag

4. Last of the Sharpshooters (JAPAN PRESS with OBI)
Released in 1997, Last of the Sharpshooters is one of Down By Law’s most polished and accomplished albums.
“USA Today,” “No Equalizer,” “Call to Arms,” “Guns of ’96” and “Question Marks & Periods” combine political observation with tight melodic punk. “Urban Napalm” adds a reggae-influenced change of pace, giving the album greater variety.
This Japanese pressing includes its OBI, making it especially attractive to collectors.
5. Punkrockacademyfightsong (JAPAN PRESS no OBI)
Released in 1994, Punkrockacademyfightsong is widely regarded as a defining Down By Law album.
“Punk Won,” “Hit or Miss,” “Flower Tattoo,” “Sympathy for the World” and the band’s energetic interpretation of “500 Miles” capture their mix of humour, conviction and melodic aggression.
