HELLBASTARD – The Need To Kill (2009)

Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1985, Hellbastard are widely recognised as pioneers of crust punk, with their influential Ripper Crust demo (1986) helping establish the genre's identity through a ferocious combination of anarcho-punk aggression and heavy metal intensity. Released in 2009 through Selfmadegod Records, The Need To Kill marked the band's return to full-length recording following their early 1990s dissolution, presenting a heavier, more thrash-oriented direction while retaining their politically charged underground identity. Featuring founding vocalist and guitarist Malcolm "Scruff" Lewty alongside drummer Stephen "Joint" Lea, the album delivers 14 tracks combining aggressive thrash metal riffs, driving hardcore rhythms, harsh vocals and muscular groove metal influences. Songs such as "Cheyne Stoking", "Going Postal", "Fir Bolg, Bow to Slough Feg" and "Business Pig Hole" demonstrate the band's developed songwriting, while six re-recorded compositions revisit material from their early crust punk era, including "Pylons II", "The Beggar II" and "Bringing Death II". Rather than simply recreating the primitive sound of Heading for Internal Darkness (1988), The Need To Kill explores a more structured and metallic approach, bridging Hellbastard's pioneering crust punk heritage with the heavier thrash metal influences that shaped their later recordings.
