MAGGUT – Maggut (2002)

Formed in Osaka, Japan, in 2001, Maggut emerged from the country's underground goregrind scene, developing an uncompromising sound rooted in the primitive brutality of early grindcore and the grotesque musical traditions established by bands such as Carcass, Regurgitate and Gut. Their self-titled 2002 demo captures the band's early musical identity through 13 short, aggressive compositions characterised by heavily distorted guitar riffs, relentless blast beats, deep guttural vocals and deliberately raw production. Featuring Masaki on vocals and bass, Funa on guitar and Susumu on drums, the recording includes tracks such as "Pickled Punk", "Cannibalism Boneheads Disorder", "Frozen Gut", "Rotten to the Core", "Tear into Dismemberment Corpse", "Lockjaw", "Shrunken Heads" and "Cannibal Carnival". With most compositions lasting barely a minute, Maggut emphasises direct, unrefined aggression over technical complexity, combining grinding rhythms, abrupt tempo changes and grotesque themes into a concentrated assault of underground extremity. The demo established the foundations for their subsequent debut full-length Into the Gore (2004), making it an interesting early document of Japan's underground goregrind movement.
