VARIOUS ARTISTS – Lost Highway (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1997)

Released in 1997, Lost Highway is the soundtrack to David Lynch's surreal psychological thriller, bringing together an extraordinary collection of alternative rock, industrial metal, dark ambient, electronic music and atmospheric film scores. Produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, the album features contributions from David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Lou Reed and Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, alongside haunting instrumental compositions by Angelo Badalamenti and Barry Adamson. Among its highlights are Nine Inch Nails' intense "The Perfect Drug", The Smashing Pumpkins' electronic-driven "Eye", Marilyn Manson's disturbing "Apple of Sodom", Rammstein's crushing "Heirate Mich" and David Bowie's unsettling "I'm Deranged", which opens and closes the album. Rather than functioning as a conventional compilation, Lost Highway creates a cohesive listening experience built around tension, mystery, darkness and psychological unease, capturing the disturbing atmosphere of Lynch's cinematic vision while showcasing some of the most distinctive alternative and industrial artists of the 1990s.
