INCANTATION – Blasphemy (2002)
Formed in New Jersey in 1989, Incantation are among the most influential bands in American death metal, renowned for their distinctive combination of cavernous guitar riffs, guttural vocals, dissonant atmospheres and crushing, doom-laden passages. Released in 2002 through Necropolis Records and Candlelight Records, Blasphemy continues the band's uncompromising exploration of dark, oppressive death metal following The Infernal Storm (2000). Featuring guitarist John McEntee, bassist Joe Lombard, drummer Kyle Severn and vocalist Mike Saez, the album delivers a suffocating mixture of relentless blast beats, twisted guitar arrangements and exceptionally slow, heavy sections that emphasise the band's death/doom influences. Songs such as "Blasphemy", "The Fallen", "Crown of Decayed Salvation", "Rotting with Your Christ" and "Misanthropic Indulgence" demonstrate Incantation's ability to alternate between violent aggression and almost ritualistic passages of crushing heaviness. Produced by Bill Korecky alongside the band, the recording retains a dense, abrasive sound that reinforces its sinister atmosphere. Although less frequently discussed than their early classics Onward to Golgotha and Mortal Throne of Nazarene, Blasphemy remains a formidable example of Incantation's enduring commitment to uncompromising underground death metal.
